Untitled document The open fishing boat known as a coble, was developed on the North East coast of England. Although the southern-most examples occur around Hull (although Cooke drew examples around Yarmouth); the type extends to berwick-upon-Tweed on the Scottish border.
The flat bottom and high bow create this boats distinctive shape. It was designed this way to cope with the particular conditions prevalent in this area. The flat bottoms allowed launching from, and landing on sandy beaches, which was a huge advantage in this part of the coast, where the wide bays didn’t provide enough shelter from the stormy weather for the ship and its’ crew. The fishermen required high bows in order to sail in the dangerous North Sea, and in particular the high bows were helpful while launching into the surf and when landing on the beaches. The design shows some resemblance of Nordic influence, however it mainly shows its Dutch origin.

There is a much shallower and beamier version of the English coble, which is the Scottish version. It serves as a salmon-fishing boat used off beaches near Montrose and Arbroath. These Scottish cobles have a less refined construction, and Ghillies employ a smaller, yet better built version for fly fishing on Scottish rivers.
The local boat-builders built cobles locally, without any drawn out plans. This gave them a long working life filled with numerous requests. The cobles had a reputation as not designed for inexperienced sailors, but once in the hands of an experienced crew it was both safe, and fast. There are a few cobles left today, and they generally use diesel engines which remove the need for the distinctive ‘lug’ sail. As another tradeoff geared towards comfort, a tarpaulin shelter often covers the bow.
As a tribute to these boats, a village of Newbiggin by the Sea, has a pub named “The Coble.”
