Accurate in almost every detail to the original Defender sailboat.

Designed by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff and built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in 1895, Defender was the 1895 America’s Cup defender and was Herreshoff’s second victorious America’s Cup defender design.

Defender was a sloop with all-metal construction, composed of manganese bronze, steel, and aluminum.. It was owned by William Kissam Vanderbilt, Edwin D. Morgan and C. Oliver Iselin, and skippered by Henry C. Haff.

After defeating the New York Yacht Club Vigilant, the Defender soon enough would rival the British keel cutter Valkyrie III and defend the cup. After the contest, the defender would retire from sailing, and four years later it was rebuilt to race in 1899. Shortly after the race which was against the America’s Cup defense candidate, Columbia, the Defender was broken up in 1901.
